The following are some of questions that are usually in many peoples’ mind and the Liaison Office would try to provide you with some answered, should you have a question that did not appear here, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Business

1. Does Southern Sudan have separate currency from north?

No, there is one currency for the whole Sudan. At the signing of CPA, the whole Sudan reinstate pound. The currency is Sudanese Pound (SDG). The current exchange rate to the US Dollar is roughly a Dollar to two Pounds.

Tourism

1. Who runs the immigration of Southern Sudan?

The immigration affairs fall under the Ministry of Interior of the Republic of Sudan and Ministry of Internal Affairs in the Government of Southern Sudan. They deal with issues such as the issuing of passports in co-ordination. Visas to Khartoum and northern parts are issued by Sudan embassy and travel permits are issued by Liaison offices of GOSS.

2. Are other areas of Southern Sudan Accessible?

Yes, from Juba, one can easily travel by land, plane, and river to most parts of Southern Sudan. Land is difficult during rainy season but travelling is still possible.

Politics

1. The status of Southern Sudan

Southern Sudan is not a country but an autonomous region that was created by the 2005 CPA. It has a full and autonomous government that runs it. However, a referendum for its future is in 2011 when a decision to remain part of the Sudan or separate will be carried out.

2. The Capital of Southern Sudan

Juba is the capital, largest city and the entering point to Southern Sudan. It is situated on the longest and famous Nile River. Juba is about 90 minutes from Khartoum, 45 minutes from Entebbe, Uganda and 90 minutes from Nairobi, Kenya by flight. Daily flights take place from Khartoum, Nairobi and Entebbe.
